Çelebi Ground Handling submits winning bid for Budapest airport ground handling services contract

Çelebi Ground Handling has been awarded the contract to provide ground handling services at Budapest Ferihegy International Airport. Invited to take part in the bidding along with the world's giants of the ground handling services sector, Çelebi submitted the winning bid on its own.

At the end of 2005, the Hungarian government transferred one share less than its 75% stake in Budapest Ferihegy International Airport under a 75-year asset management contract to the firm of BAA International Holding Limited, which also owns the Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Southampton airports in the UK. After the transfer of the shares to BAA, the firm of Budapest Airport Zrt, the operator of the Budapest airport, decided to auction off its 100% stake in the firm of Budapest Airport Handling Kereskedelmi es Szolgaltato Kft, which provides ground handling services at the airport. This was the auction that Çelebi submitted its bid in on 7 August 2006.

Four days later on August 11th, Çelebi was notified that it had been chosen and was invited to come to Hungary to discuss the share transfer agreement and other related matters.

Çelebi Ground Handling was one of a small number of major ground handlers from around the world who were invited to submit sealed bids on the grounds that their experience in the sector, financial strength, and service quality were believed to be sufficient to significantly improve the quality and standards of existing services at the airport. Çelebi submitted its bid on its own.

Negotiations related to the transfer of the shares are to begin in the next few days and it is expected that they will be completed and that the final agreement will be signed soon.

Fire at the Cargo Terminal of Istanbul Atatürk Cargo Terminal

While we were busy with the final touches of IATA Gala Dinner, an unfortunate fire that broke out in the cargo terminal of Istanbul Atatürk Airport, affected one of our three warehouses located in this area as well. Our consolation is that no lives were lost and we could rapidly start our operations again as the result of urgent measures taken by all public and private institutions.

Furthermore, the solidarity among the companies that suffered from the fire and the assistance provided by the unaffected ones are the evidences of the maturity level in the civil aviation sector.

We thank our colleagues from all over the world for their support.
