Çelebi Ground Handling awarded ISO 9001-2000 certificate
In late 2002 Çelebi Ground Handling applied to obtain an ISO 9001-2000 quality assurance certificate. Having successfully passed its audit, the company was awarded the certificate at 5 pm on Thursday, 5 June 2003 in a simple ceremony held in the Akfen room at the international terminal at Atatürk Airport in İstanbul. The certificate was presented to Can Çelebioğlu, Canan Çelebioğlu Tokgöz, and A. Cemil Erman by Hasan Arkan, general manager of TÜV Rhineland. Mr Erman, who is Çelebi Ground Handling's new general manager, said that he had only become general manager and did not believe that he could have played much of a role in the certificate's being awarded. He handed it instead to Quality Manager Seza Yalız, saying that he was more entitled to be its recipient. Expressing his thanks, Can Çelebioğlu said certificates of this type were important not only in themselves but also because they were recognition and evidence of Çelebi's efforts to develop and adhere to uniform standards over the years.
Çelebi Ground Handling again one of Turkey's leading taxpayers in 2002
In the rankings published by the finance ministry for 2002, Çelebi Ground Handling once again figured among the country's leading taxpayers, placing 75th in Turkey, 45th in İstanbul, and 3rd in the Transportation Tax Office with which it is registered. Kadir Boy, chief financial director for İstanbul, presented the certificate of appreciation to the company at the personal request of tax office director Rakım Gürbüz. The certificate was presented to Çelebi Holding President Can Çelebioğlu in a brief ceremony held to mark the occasion.
Çelebi Ground Handling's cargo and warehouse facilities opened by Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım
Çelebi Ground Handling's cargo and warehouse facilities, which are located in the cargo section of Atatürk Airport, were formally opened in a ceremony also attended by Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Yıldırım said that the logistics sector was one that had only recently begun to develop in Turkey but that it was a sector with a very promising future. Noting the importance of Turkey's-and especially İstanbul's-geographical location, Mr Yıldırım said that more than four hundred million people lived in the region of which Turkey was a part and added:
"What that means is this: The place most suitable for transshipment centers from which cargoes can most conveniently be sent to different parts of this region is İstanbul and other cities in Turkey. This being so, in situations today where time has become more precious than money, the issues of speed, security, and trouble-free door-to-door delivery to the recipient have all become more important than ever. I applaud this enterprise aimed at increasing the volume of our air cargo shipping, which is presently quite low when compare with what is handled by warehouses in other airports around the world."
Noting that security issues had become matters of primary concern all over the world since the September 11th attacks, Binali Yıldırım said "Both those who provide the actual services and other airlines active in an airport have great responsibilities in ensuring that incoming cargos are fully checked and in preventing unwanted incidents from occurring. Human life and safety cannot be measured simply in terms of cost."
Minister Yıldırım also expressed the satisfaction that he felt on account of the special attention being given to security issues at Çelebi Ground Handling's cargo and warehouse facilities and also because of the state-of-the-art technologies being employed in it.
In his own remarks, Çelebi Ground Handling's president Can Çelebioğlu said that his company had forty-five years of experience and today was at the service of about 250 airlines.
After the speeches were over, Minister Yıldırım and Mr Çelebioğlu together pressed a button that opened the warehouse's main door and formally opened the facility by cutting a ribbon strung across the door.
Çelebi Ground Handling awarded contract for Moroccan airport ground handling services
Çelebi Ground Handling submitted the winning bid for a contract to take care of ground handling services in Morocco.
A joint venture consisting of Çelebi Ground Handling, Flightcare Ground Services (owned by Çelebi's strategic partner FCC), and Fez-based Finamco has submitted the winning bid for the contract to provide ground handling services at Moroccan airports.
The request for tenders announced on 15 July 2003 by ONDA, the National Office of Airports of the Moroccan Ministry of Transportation, was for the purpose of choosing a second organization to provide ground handling services principally at the Casablanca Mohammed V, Agadir Al-Massira, and Marrakech Menara airports but also at other Moroccan airports open to international flights.
Kuwait Airport tender
Çelebi Ground Handling will be submitting a bid in a joint venture with Tepe-Akfen for a "build-operate-transfer" project to provide ground handling and technical services at Kuwait International Airport.
Çelebi Ground Handling Inc. Cargo and Warehouse
Although EU measures aimed at protecting the consumer and eliminating monopoly practices in the civil aviation industry's ground handling services sector were taken in the Turkish market long before they were in many European countries, the same cannot be said where air cargo transport services are concerned.
The overwhelming majority (something like 90%) of all air cargo in our country passes through İstanbul Atatürk Airport; yet when the actual figures are compared with other international airports, one immediately notices that the volume is really quite small.
To give a few concrete examples: Tokyo airport handles 2,406 thousand tons of cargo a year while Frankfurt handles 1,613 thousand, Dubai 612 thousand, Hong Kong 2,100 thousand, and Seoul 599 thousand. İstanbul's airport on the other hand handles a mere 187 thousand tons a year. In view of our country's geographical position and its proximity to both Middle East and CIS countries, that figure is low indeed.
Customs laws and regulations in our country did not even allow private sector concerns to operate bonded warehouses until 1999, which is why our company was prevented from becoming active in an area of business that was always high on its agenda. After changes were made in the legal framework however, we decided to put our knowledge, experience, clout, and corporate culture to work in providing cargo warehousing services at Atatürk Airport while also making our own contribution to efforts to raise air cargo traffic flows through İstanbul to desirable levels. In response to our company's application, Çelebi was assigned 5,075 m2 of space at the airport in which to set up and conduct its operations.
The Çelebi cargo facilities were opened for service by Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım at 10:30 on 6 July 2003. Depots and warehouses represent one of the most important links in the chain of door-to-door delivery from producer to buyer by providing a setting in which a diverse mixture goods from equally diverse sources can be completely cleared through customs, stored, insured, and moved in a timely and secure manner. Our recently opened facilities are fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology and all movements of goods inside the warehouse are electronically monitored by means of an installed barcode system.
Highly experienced in cargo services, one aspect of ground handling services, Çelebi Ground Handling (ÇGH) handled 62,000 tons of cargo in 2002 (48,000 tons in 2001) for the airline companies with which it has agreements.
As of 6 July 2003, ÇGH also began providing warehousing services, the next link in the cargo handling services chain, in its own bonded warehouse.
Fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the ÇGH cargo building was especially designed to provide maximum security. A security team on duty round the clock employs a video monitoring and recording system to protect the entire building against fire, theft, and sabotage. Metal detectors are used to check all entries into the cargo building and only authorized persons are admitted to the facility's office areas. A handprint recognition system installed at the entrance to the warehouse area provides maximum security at this crucial crossing-point.
Three x-ray devices are employed to check all cargoes before their admission to the warehouse, thereby ensuring warehouse, airport, and aircraft security. Cargo that has been x-rayed is also passed through a scanner capable of electronically measuring volume and weight. This information allows cargoes taken in delivery to be loaded aboard aircraft much more securely. Ten truck loading and discharging platforms have been constructed at the entrance to the cargo building in order to provide customers with faster and more effective service. In addition to these platforms, there are also eight palette bays and a mobile platform available for moving imported cargoes and for palette opening/release processing. An electronic scale is used to ready and surrender export cargoes. Everything has been designed to improve efficiency in all import/export processing.
Modern office space available for the use of the warehouse's customers enables them to track the movements of their cargoes in the fastest and most effective way possible while also providing instantaneous access to and coordination with ÇGH cargo service management.
ÇGH cargo service's goal is to put 45 years of Çelebi company experience and employee competencies to work in order to provide all firms active in the air cargo transport industry with security, quality, speed, productivity, and, most important of all, customer satisfaction.

Çelebi's 45th year
When we were founded in 1958 by Ali Cavit we were just a little company. We've grown up with Can and Canan and become a big one.
We've seen a lot of crises and been through a lot of wars. Just look at our history and be amazed.
In a monument to forty-five years of service, you can appreciate the sincerity in a confident voice. Listen to Ali Cavit's last words of advice and be amazed.
Ear to the walkie-talkie eyes on the horizon, serving every incoming aircraft immediately daytime and night: see the quality and be amazed.
Be my birds winging across the sky. Glide down and land on the apron. Bring up the boarding ramp and open the doors. See the service and be amazed.
Skies of blue, clouds of white: pay no heed to rain or cold when there's work to be done. Sometimes we have a rough summer too. See our eagerness and be amazed.
The hour's not important when we're working. We hurry about in a sweet bustle with smiles blossoming on our faces. See our dedication and be amazed.
People around the world and Çelebi employees: working together in every aspect of aviation. Çelebi Holding's goal is the world market. See our goal and be amazed.

News from ESB
ESB station personnel had a little party with food that they prepared at home and brought to the station. It was a lot of fun and we had the pleasure of sharing with one another. We offer our thanks especially to our accounting manager Ferhan Sönmez, who helped organize this fine day and to our head manager, Filiz Özyurt for her support.
Born to fly…
A bird's nest was discovered in an aircraft tire at the Antalya station.
Tournament begins on 25 June 2003
The finals took place this year on 24 July. Four teams were formed at the station: Cabin Crew Youth, Push-Back Force, Check-In Falcons, and Stone Ovens. The two teams playing in the final were the Check-In Falcons (traffic and operations) and Push-Back Force (Ramp).
Esenboğa stations 2003 soccer season ended with a Check-In Falcons victory. The winners were presented with a small award. Our sports activities are as sporting as they are fun and will continue. We may be the oldest station be we believe that we're also the most dynamic one. We're a good team. Congratulations to the victorious Check-In Falcons and here's hoping for their future success.
